North Platte Canteen Congressional Gold Medal Act
Sponsored By: Senator Deb Fischer
Introduced
Summary
Awards a Congressional Gold Medal to the volunteers and communities that ran the North Platte Canteen. The bill would authorize a collective gold medal for people and communities that provided goods, money, and volunteer service to the North Platte Canteen in North Platte, Nebraska from December 25, 1941 to April 1, 1946. It would direct the Secretary of the Treasury to design and strike the medal, allow presentation by the Speaker and the President pro tempore, transfer the medal to the Lincoln County Historical Museum for display and research, and permit the Secretary to strike and sell bronze duplicates to cover costs from the U.S. Mint Public Enterprise Fund. The bill’s findings note the Canteen served about 6,000,000 troops, involved roughly 55,000 volunteers from 125 communities, and raised about $137,000.
