Summary
Interest-free deferment for medical and dental residents. This bill would let borrowers serving in a medical or dental internship or residency pause federal student loan payments while interest does not accrue. It amends the Higher Education Act to add those programs to in-school deferment eligibility and creates a special rule saying periodic principal installments need not be paid and no interest accrues on loans made under the Act during the internship or residency period.

Zero-Interest Pause for Medical Residents
If enacted, borrowers in a medical or dental internship or residency would get a special in-school deferment. During the deferment you would not have to pay principal and interest would not accrue. It only applies to loans made under that part of the Higher Education Act. This would override other deferment rules and would take effect upon enactment.
