Show full summary
- Mothers and families: Highlights that about 800 women die each year from pregnancy-related causes and that 83.5% of those deaths are considered preventable. It also calls attention to gaps in postpartum mental-health screening.
- Rural communities: Notes that 59% of rural counties are maternity care deserts and that average travel for care from those counties is about 28.1 miles. It raises concerns about higher morbidity and mortality rates in rural areas.
- Racial and tribal disparities: Points out that Black women have nearly 3 times the pregnancy-related mortality ratio of White women and that American Indian and Alaska Native women have more than twice the mortality. It promotes respectful, culturally competent care.
- Providers and policymakers: Encourages support for community-based models such as midwifery, doula services, perinatal health workers, group prenatal care, expanded telehealth, and investments in the maternal health workforce.
