Beginning October 1, 2026, the Secretary of Aging leads the Longevity Ready Maryland Plan. The Secretary evaluates older adults’ needs, checks how programs work, and coordinates services so people can live at home. The Department runs an information, referral, and counseling system and posts a public tracker on its website. The Secretary advocates for policy changes and works with the Commission on Aging. By January 1 each year, the Secretary reports progress and recommendations to the Governor and, as allowed, to the General Assembly. A full plan update is due by July 1, 2029, and then every four years.
Beginning October 1, 2026, the Commission on Aging reviews the Longevity Ready Maryland Plan and progress by the Department and partners. It advises the Secretary on needed laws, policies, and system changes. It also advises on updates to goals, objectives, and strategies for future plans.
Starting October 1, 2026, the Commission on Aging includes a senator, a delegate, the Secretary or designee, and Governor‑appointed members such as area agency leaders, advocates, experts, interested residents, and one veteran. Appointments aim to reflect Maryland’s diversity across age, race, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, immigrant heritage, experience, and region. The Department of Aging provides staff to support the Commission.
Starting October 1, 2026, Commission members serve four‑year terms. Members in the Governor‑appointed categories can serve no more than two back‑to‑back terms. To stagger turnover, four seats end in 2028, five in 2029, and five in 2030.
Starting October 1, 2026, the Commission sets how often and where it meets. The Secretary of Aging names the chair and may name a vice chair. A majority of members then serving is a quorum, the chair may create subcommittees, and the Commission can work with local aging commissions. Members are not paid, but they can be repaid for travel costs under State rules and the budget. Any member who attends less than half the meetings in any 12 months is treated as having resigned.
