Beginning October 1, 2026, some drivers must join the ignition interlock program to get a modified or restricted license. You must join if a court orders it, if you were under 21 at the time of a §21-902(c) violation, or if you broke an alcohol restriction on your license. The law also lists who can be placed in the program, including drivers suspended or revoked for impaired-driving violations, drivers with drug‑impaired points, and drivers given a modified or restricted license. If you are required to join and do not start or finish, your license is suspended for 1 year. If you qualify, the Administration issues you a restricted license while you follow program rules.
Beginning October 1, 2026, the Motor Vehicle Administration runs a statewide ignition interlock program. Companies that install and service devices must meet minimum standards, show training and competence, and send user reports at least every 30 days. A manufacturer must sign an affidavit certifying each approved provider. Approved providers are treated as the manufacturer’s representatives, and legal notice to a provider counts as notice to the manufacturer. These rules add ongoing compliance and reporting duties and may raise costs for providers.
