New license paths for beauty workers

Beginning October 1, 2026, Maryland sets standard paths to limited licenses in esthetics, eyelash extensions, hair, blow drying, and nails. You must be at least 17, have finished 9th grade (or equivalent), and complete 1 hour of domestic violence awareness training. Esthetics needs 6 months as a registered apprentice or 600 school hours; hair needs 15 months or 1,200 hours. Nails need 3 months or 250 hours; blow‑dry needs 350 school hours. Eyelash extensions need 3 months or 100 hours, and the old exam‑only option for lashes is removed. You still must pass the Board exam to get the license.

Easier licensing for out-of-state pros

Beginning October 1, 2026, if you held a limited license in another state or country and practiced for 6 months, Maryland counts that toward training. This applies to esthetics, eyelash extensions, hair, blow drying, and nails. You must still meet Maryland’s other rules, including age, education, and the Board exam.

Board exam required for limited licenses

Beginning October 1, 2026, you must take and pass a State Board exam to get any limited cosmetology license. This covers esthetics, eyelash extensions, hair, blow drying, and nails. It creates one common standard, but adds a testing step you must clear.
