Maryland veterans scholarship continues past 2030

Beginning July 1, 2026, the scholarship no longer ends in 2030. The state can keep giving first-time and renewal awards after that date. Maryland residents who served in Afghanistan (on or after Oct 24, 2001) or Iraq (on or after Mar 19, 2003), or their spouses or children, can apply if accepted or enrolled in an eligible undergraduate or transfer‑track 2‑year program. The award can pay tuition, mandatory fees, and room and board. Each year it can be up to 50% of the annual cost at the highest‑cost 4‑year public University System of Maryland school, excluding UMGC and UMB. The scholarship can also supplement any federal education benefits.

Dedicated fund for veterans scholarship

Beginning July 1, 2026, the state uses a special, nonlapsing fund for this scholarship. The State Treasurer holds the money and the Comptroller keeps the accounts. The Higher Education Commission can accept gifts and grants and must use them for scholarships. The Commission must send an annual report on fund receipts and spending to the General Assembly.
