2 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 1 costs, 1 mixed.

Mandatory interlocks for some drivers

Beginning October 1, 2026, Maryland runs an ignition interlock program. You can join if your license is suspended for driving while impaired by drugs or by drugs and alcohol, you have related points, or your license has an alcohol restriction. If a judge orders it, you were under 21 at the time of the drugs-or-drugs-and-alcohol offense, or you violate an alcohol restriction, you must join. If you do not join or do not finish, the MVA suspends your license for 1 year. MVA may change a suspension to let you join and must give a restricted license to a required participant who is otherwise eligible.

New rules for interlock providers

Beginning October 1, 2026, interlock service businesses must meet new rules. To be approved, a provider must send device reports to the MVA at least every 30 days. Each application must include a manufacturer-signed affidavit showing the provider is trained and competent. Approved providers are treated as the maker’s authorized agents, and legal notice to a provider counts as notice to the manufacturer.
