Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 0 costs, 2 mixed.

Arabian races allowed, with strict limits

Licensees at Pimlico and Laurel Park can run live Arabian horse races. They may hold up to one Arabian race per day and no more than three per meet. Each Arabian race is in addition to, not a replacement for, thoroughbred races, and cannot cut the daily thoroughbred count. The race purse cannot use the thoroughbred purse account; the licensee or a sponsor must fund it. Usual takeout rules apply, and the licensee pays the same taxes and fees as for a thoroughbred race. Each race needs State Racing Commission approval, and the law takes effect immediately as an emergency measure.

Proof required for Arabian race entries

An Arabian breed horse is a purebred Arabian with a valid Arabian Jockey Club of America registry certificate. Only horses with this certificate qualify for Arabian races under Maryland racing law. Owners must show this certificate to enter; horses without it are not eligible.
