Beginning July 1, 2026, counties with a volunteer fire company must offer free preventive cancer screenings to volunteers. This covers active volunteer firefighters and retired volunteers who meet the law’s rules. A retired volunteer must have fought fires, served at least 3 years, received length‑of‑service benefits for 5+ years, and earned 50+ points. Screenings follow the latest International Association of Fire Fighters guidelines. Counties may meet this with a free annual exam that includes these screenings, or use a state grant for new tech like a multi‑cancer blood test.
Starting July 1, 2026, each volunteer fire company must keep an up‑to‑date list of current and retired volunteers. It must give the list to the county by October 1 each year and when the county asks. Each county must keep a countywide list built from these lists to run the free screening program.
