Protection when rescuing kids or pets

Beginning July 27, 2025, you are immune from civil lawsuits for damage to a car if you enter it to rescue a vulnerable person or a household pet. You must first check the car is locked or there is no safe way out. You must reasonably believe the person or pet is in immediate danger. You must call 911 or notify police before you enter. Use only the force needed, then stay with the person or pet near the car until responders arrive. “Vulnerable person” includes anyone under 18 or someone impaired by disability or aging. “Domestic animal” means pets, not livestock. This immunity covers only damage to the car, not other injuries or claims.
