Beginning July 1, 2028, the state funds counties to run accredited veterans service officers. A county is eligible if its share of veterans getting VA disability or pension pay is below the national average. Money is prioritized first to the lowest-share counties, then to eligible counties without a VSO. Funding generally supports up to one full-time officer per county. Counties in the program must also serve veterans from neighboring counties. Funding happens only if the Legislature provides the money.
Beginning July 1, 2028, the Department of Veterans Affairs contacts newly discharged veterans. The department must reach out within 90 days of getting a Defense Department discharge notice. The contact gives information about veterans benefits and services. This outreach happens only if the Legislature provides money.
