Beginning June 11, 2026, ambulance companies cannot sell or assign debt from a motor vehicle crash to a licensed collection agency for at least 120 days after the first bill is sent. The first bill may be mailed or sent electronically and must go to you and any other responsible party. A motor vehicle accident includes when a pedestrian or bicyclist is hit. If a company shows a pattern of ignoring this rule, the insurance commissioner can refer it to the Department of Health after giving a chance to fix or explain. The Department of Health may fine the company up to the legal per-violation amount and must report the result back.
