Plan and list pet-friendly shelters

Local governments must plan for cosheltering pets and people when they update emergency plans. They must name which shelters can take people with companion animals, when possible. When shelters open for a disaster or extreme weather, they must try to identify at least one coshelter. The law defines a companion animal as a household pet like a dog or cat, and a coshelter as a place where you can stay in the same or nearby area as your pet.

Post pet emergency info online

Local governments must post pet emergency information on their websites. When possible, they list which shelters can take companion animals. They provide tips to make a pet evacuation plan and checklist that follow FEMA guidance. They also list local groups that offer emergency help for pets.

Safety rules for pet sheltering

Any shelter that takes people with companion animals must have safety procedures for those animals. It must also follow Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) disaster assistance policies and procedures.
