Broader fingerprint checks for caregivers

Beginning July 27, 2025, caregivers who work without supervision must give fingerprints for a Washington State Patrol and FBI check. This covers many roles in state-run or funded care, and people age 16 or older who live in certain provider homes. If you lived in Washington less than three years, you must be printed for some home and community long‑term care, area agency on aging, or tribal jobs with unsupervised access. The law defines “high‑risk providers,” and includes anyone who owns 5% or more of them, for extra screening. Long‑term care workers hired after January 7, 2012 remain subject to national fingerprint checks.

120-day provisional hiring during checks

Applicants who must get a fingerprint check can be hired for up to 120 days while the check is pending, if the initial result does not disqualify them. Long‑term care workers covered by RCW 74.39A.056 are not eligible for this provisional hire. This helps employers fill jobs sooner while final results arrive.

Agencies cover many fingerprint fees

For many care roles, the department pays the State Patrol and FBI fees for your fingerprint check. This includes developmental disability services, Medicaid personal care, COPES waiver services, chore services, other home and community long‑term care, and secure facility services. DCYF also pays these fingerprint fees for foster care and childcare applicants and providers. The departments set rules on who pays local rolling, printing, or scanning charges, so some costs can still fall on applicants or providers.
