School care for students with adrenal insufficiency

Beginning with the 2025–26 school year, school districts must create an individual health plan (IHP) for any student with adrenal insufficiency. The plan follows parent requests and a licensed health professional’s orders. The school stores parent‑provided medicine and equipment, makes needed exceptions to school rules, and shares the emergency plan with staff. Plans are reviewed and updated at least once a year. Medicine is given under existing state school medication rules. Parents may name a trained parent‑designated adult to give care under the IHP, including emergency steroid shots. A non‑nurse school employee can serve only by choice and after filing a current, voluntary letter of intent; they cannot be forced or punished for refusing.

Liability shield and nurse rules at school

School districts, staff, and parent‑designated adults get legal protection when they act in good faith and follow a student’s IHP and the licensed health professional’s instructions. This immunity covers care provided under the new adrenal insufficiency rules and related school health laws. The law does not change nurse delegation rules; when those rules apply, they still control.
