Beginning July 27, 2025, caregivers in assisted living, adult family homes, certified residential programs for people with developmental disabilities, and in-home care can help you self-administer prescription drugs, including controlled substances. Help can include reminding you, opening the container, handing you the medicine, using an aid, or placing it in your hand. A practitioner can also allow them to prepare your doses for self-administration if the practitioner says it is necessary and appropriate, told orally or in writing. These rules apply to nonpractitioners who are helping you take your own medicine.
Beginning July 27, 2025, caregivers in these care settings cannot help with IV medicines or injections. Two exceptions apply. They can set up diabetic devices for you to use yourself. They can hand you an injectable so you can give it to yourself. Otherwise, they cannot assist with IV or injection administration.
