Beginning July 27, 2025, the Washington Department of Health inspects all birthing centers. Inspectors can enter all parts of the site and review records, administration, food services, and supplies. The department can require centers to submit plans for alterations, additions, or new construction for review before work starts. These checks help keep patients safe.
Beginning July 27, 2025, accredited birthing centers can skip a state licensure survey if three things are met: the Washington Department of Health finds the accreditor’s standards substantially equivalent, an on-site accreditation survey happened within the last 36 months, and the department gets the latest survey report. The department can still survey any service areas the accreditor did not review. It may also run validation surveys on no more than 10 percent of accredited applicants. If the department later finds the accreditor’s standards are not equivalent, it must notify affected centers and explain the consumer risk, under state administrative procedure rules. This pathway does not change the department’s initial licensing process or its enforcement powers.
