The law lets many retired school employees keep their pension while working part-time. If you return more than one month after your accrual date (more than 100 days for public employees’ plans) and take a nonadministrative school job, you can work up to 1,040 hours a year and still get your pension. Some plans count hours by calendar year; others use the school year. If you retired before January 1, 2022 and work as a superintendent or in‑school administrator in a second‑class district, the 1,040‑hour limit also applies. Once you go over 1,040 hours, pension payments stop while you work. These rules run from March 23, 2022 through January 1, 2030. Outside these cases, the normal limit is 867 hours per year.
