Beginning July 27, 2025, the Department of Health and local health agencies enforce state rules for public water systems. They use their legal powers to review and approve systems and ensure they meet operating and safety rules. This enforcement supports safe, reliable drinking water for households.
Beginning July 27, 2025, Group A water systems must protect water sources and treat water to protect health. They must run and maintain facilities and plan for growth. They must give the health department current owner and emergency contact details. They must give users a name and a 24-hour emergency phone number. They must investigate and fix problems to keep safe, reliable water flowing.
Beginning July 27, 2025, the state only approves a new Group A water system if a satellite management agency owns or runs it, or if no satellite is available and the system proves strong management and finances. Approvals can require future satellite ownership or regular performance reviews. For new Group B systems, satellite management is required if the system must treat water, provides fire flow, has atmospheric storage, or serves 10 or more connections. Local boards of health can set even stricter satellite rules. These steps aim to keep drinking water safe and reliable.
