Beginning January 1, 2027, port district employees who are in the federal railroad retirement plan are not in the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) for the same period of work. They do not have to pay PERS contributions for those covered periods. This prevents duplicate retirement contributions and service credit. The rule only applies to the time that the federal railroad plan covers. This can lower your contributions but may change how your PERS benefits grow.
