Beginning June 30, 2027, advanced practice registered nurses can prescribe regular prescription drugs and Schedule V drugs. They may also prescribe Schedules II–IV as allowed by the Board’s scope and RCW 18.79.240(1)(r) or (s). Board‑approved nurse anesthetists without prescriptive authority before July 1, 2026, may select, order, or give Schedules II–IV. They must follow facility protocols and have a physician, osteopathic physician, dentist, or podiatrist request their anesthesia services. This is limited to drugs they directly give to patients who need anesthesia in hospitals, clinics, surgery centers, or certain offices.
Beginning June 30, 2027, the Board may issue interim permits once it verifies you finished your nursing program. You can work as an RN, APRN, or LPN until you get exam results. If you pass and meet other rules, the Department of Health issues your license. If you fail, the interim permit ends and cannot be renewed. You must also submit a sworn Department form and any official records the Board requires to apply. LPN applicants must show they are over 18.
Some parts of this law start later. Sections 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 take effect June 30, 2027. Sections 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11 end on June 30, 2027. Changes in those sections only apply until that date.
