Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 0 costs, 1 mixed.

Bigger survivor pension after service deaths

Survivors get a higher pension when a member dies on duty or in certain covered service. The pension is calculated without early-retirement or joint-and-survivor cuts. The law sets a minimum of 10% of final average pay, plus 2% for each year over five. For deaths while serving in the National Guard, reserves, FEMA, or the national disaster medical system, coverage includes service on or after March 22, 2014.

Benefits restored after remarriage for survivors

For survivors of a member killed on the job, if your industrial-insurance payment stopped because you remarried, the law pays you the amount you would have received. This applies only if the suspension or end happened before July 24, 2015. If you got a lump sum before, new monthly checks are reduced to reflect that.

Medical premium reimbursements for survivors

You get reimbursed for health insurance premiums if your spouse or parent was killed on the job. Payments cover Washington Health Care Authority plans and Medicare Parts A and B. You must enroll in both Parts A and B to get Medicare premium refunds. You can also get refunds for premiums you paid from the date of death until officials rule it was a line-of-duty death, including employer plans and COBRA. If you bought other coverage, refunds are capped at what COBRA would have cost. These refunds apply to premiums paid after June 10, 2010.
