Elevator safety panel for small apartments

The State Building Code Council convenes a technical advisory group on elevator rules for small apartment buildings. The group studies hoistway opening protection and two-way visual emergency communication devices. It weighs safety and cost for small buildings. Members include fire chiefs, a code official, a state elevator inspector, an elevator manufacturer, elevator workers, a Washington elevator nonprofit, disability and senior advocates, and a small multifamily developer and architect. This work informs the 2027 technical codes.

Smaller elevators for small apartments

For the 2027 technical codes, the State Building Code Council sets standards so cities and counties can permit passenger elevators that are only as large as federal accessibility rules require. This applies to apartment buildings with six or fewer stories and 24 or fewer total units. Local building officials can use these rules when reviewing plans for small multifamily buildings.
