Where cannabis businesses can advertise

Beginning January 1, 2026, you may not place cannabis ads within 1,000 feet of schools, playgrounds, rec centers, child care centers, public parks, libraries, or arcades that admit people under 21. Transit ads are banned, including on vehicles and at bus stops, stations, and airports. Outdoor ads and billboards can only show your business or trade name, location, and the type of business; no product pictures. Ads are banned in arenas, stadiums, malls, state‑funded fairs, farmers markets, and arcades unless the area is 21+. Event ads outside are only allowed in a 21+ area, no more than 14 days before the event, and only for brand‑name identification of the event. You may not target ads to people who live outside Washington. Cannabis ads are also banned inside certain other state‑licensed businesses.

New limits on cannabis store signs

Beginning January 1, 2026, you may have up to four advertising signs, only on the side of the building with the main entrance. Each sign may be no larger than 1,600 square inches and must be on that side or in those windows. Any sign visible from the public right‑of‑way counts as advertising. Small signs under 512 square inches are allowed if they show only basic info (like hours or “open”) and no brands or cannabis images. You may add up to two trade‑name signs that follow local size rules and show only your business name; a double‑sided sign with the same content counts as one.

What doesn't count as cannabis advertising

Beginning January 1, 2026, placing products inside your licensed store does not count as advertising. Noncommercial messages are not covered by these ad rules. Adopt‑a‑Highway signs with a current state DOT sponsorship are also not treated as advertising.

Content and age rules for cannabis ads

Beginning January 1, 2026, you may not target people under 21 or use toys, inflatables, movie or cartoon characters, or a commercial mascot outside and near your store. All ads must include clear text that only people 21+ may buy or possess cannabis; trade name signs are not covered. Ads and billboards cannot show alcohol, tobacco or nicotine, or link cannabis to driving or motor vehicles.

Local rules and fines for ads

Beginning January 1, 2026, the Liquor and Cannabis Board adopts rules to carry out these ad limits. Until penalties are set by rule, the Board fines $1,000 per violation; fines go to the state’s dedicated cannabis account. Cities, towns, and counties may set stricter outdoor ad rules and must enforce their own rules.

No below-cost cannabis sales, with exception

Beginning January 1, 2026, you may not advertise, offer, or sell cannabis below your acquisition cost. This ban does not apply to products designated for medical use sold to qualifying patients under RCW 69.51A.010.
