Medicaid plans delay new addiction criteria

Effective July 27, 2025, the state delays use of the ASAM 4th Edition for substance use treatment decisions. Medicaid managed care plans, and state‑regulated health insurers, do not have to use ASAM 4 yet. The Health Care Authority and the Office of the Insurance Commissioner jointly decide whether to adopt ASAM 4 and will post the decision on their websites. If they adopt it, plans must start using it no later than January 1, 2028. This also covers versions for adolescents and transition‑age youth.
