The law defines medical debt broadly, including bills not past due or already paid. Cosmetic surgery is excluded, except some reconstructive care. Providers, hospitals, and licensed collectors cannot send your medical debt to credit bureaus. If they do, the debt is void and not enforceable; hospitals and doctor groups also face licensing violations. Credit bureaus cannot include medical debt in reports unless the report is for credit or life insurance of $50,000 or more, or for a job paying $20,000 a year or more.
When you leave the hospital after an inpatient stay, the hospital gives you a written list of doctor groups and partners who may bill you. The list includes their phone numbers and a main number to call for billing help about that stay.
