Beginning January 1, 2026, health plans must cover a 12-month supply of FDA-approved birth control at one time. This applies when the plan covers contraceptive drugs and is issued or renewed on or after that date. You can ask for a smaller supply, or your prescriber can require less. Plans must let you get it at your provider’s office if the office dispenses it. Dispensing rules must follow clinical guidelines to protect health and keep access easy. If you already got a 12-month supply that plan year, the plan may limit refills in the last quarter. Birth control includes FDA-approved pills, patches, and vaginal rings.
