Beginning July 27, 2025, a family home child care in the surrounding metro area of a federal military reservation does not need a Washington state license if it is overseen and currently certified by a federal military service. These homes are exempt from state child care licensing. Parents should know these homes follow military certification, not state licensing.
Beginning July 27, 2025, the state Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) investigates reports of child abuse or neglect at family home child cares in the surrounding metro area of a federal military reservation. DCYF makes findings and can refer cases to law enforcement. Facilities must share records needed for the investigation. DCYF sends its report to the home and to the agency that licenses or oversees the program.
