Beginning June 11, 2026, the law defines a kit home as 800 square feet or smaller with prefabricated walls, floors, and a roof assembled on site. The State Building Code Council must set kit home rules by March 31, 2027. The council can update state building and energy codes for these homes. Clear rules help buyers and builders permit small homes, and following the updated codes can add compliance steps and costs.
