Homeowners can use state-approved siding

You can use any exterior cladding (siding) that meets the Washington State Building Code. Cities, code cities, and counties cannot ban or require other specific materials if the siding meets that state code. This does not apply in HOAs or plat communities, historic districts or landmarks, wildland‑urban interface areas, or cities with old‑world Bavarian design rules; for counties, it also excludes structures next to those cities. Exterior cladding means a nonload‑bearing material on the outside of a building. Cities and counties may still require fire‑resistant siding to protect against wildfire.
