Easier occupancy rules for child care in shared buildings

Beginning July 27, 2025, officials set occupancy for child care centers in shared buildings based only on the space used for care. This applies to building code enforcement and to licensing and safety inspections by the State Patrol’s fire protection office. Centers in churches, schools, or other multi-use buildings are not tied to the rest of the building for occupancy counts. This makes rules clearer and can help add child care slots in existing spaces.
