Outreach and rules for blood type on ID cards

Beginning January 1, 2026, the Department of Licensing works with health providers, emergency responders, and blood donation groups to tell people about this option. The department can set rules on what proof counts and update systems so it runs smoothly.

Add blood type to state ID

Beginning January 1, 2026, you can choose to print your blood type on your Washington driver’s license or identicard. You must show proof from a licensed doctor, medical facility, or blood donation group. The department provides forms to submit your proof when you apply or renew. The Department of Licensing may charge a one-time fee up to $2 the first time you add it.
