Starting January 1, 2025, Washington adds 2.9% on the part of an individual’s Washington capital gains over $1,000,000. That makes the rate on that slice 9.9%. The tax applies to sales of long‑term capital assets by individuals. It counts as a 2025 tax, and the state collects it in 2026.
For deaths on or after July 1, 2025, Washington sets a $3,000,000 estate tax exclusion. Starting in 2026, the exclusion rises each year with inflation and never goes down. Estate tax rates also rise, with a top 35% rate on amounts over $9,000,000. The family‑owned business deduction cap is $3,000,000 for deaths on or after July 1, 2025, and it is indexed each year. If some property is outside Washington, the tax is scaled to the Washington share.
