Beginning June 11, 2026, groups that give out donated car seats must follow safety steps. They must ask about the seat’s history when they accept it. They must attach a note saying they do not know the full history and cannot guarantee safety. They must confirm the seat is not expired and not under a safety recall. They cannot give out any car seat that is expired or recalled.
Beginning June 11, 2026, the law protects people and groups that donate or give out children’s items for free. Charities and religious groups are covered, and public health agencies are covered only when working with them. Donors include those who give items, repair or update them to current standards, or donate storage space. Items include clothes, diapers, formula, cribs, strollers, car seats, toys, high chairs, and books. Donors and distributing groups are not liable for civil or criminal claims about an item’s nature, age, condition, or packaging unless they act with gross negligence or intentional misconduct.
