Beginning June 11, 2026, the Washington Professional Educator Standards Board runs ongoing reviews of all approved teacher and principal preparation programs. Reviews use program and role standards, program evidence, and input from community members and preK–12 partners, including classroom teachers and district leaders. The board updates the review tools as classroom needs and state or federal rules change. The board posts review results online so people can compare programs. When a program falls short, the board orders fixes and the program must state how it will meet the standards.
Beginning January 1, 2027, every approved teacher‑prep program must create a field‑placement partnership plan with nearby school districts. Plans are made with districts that want to partner and aim to place students in high‑need subjects and areas, like special education, English‑learner support, Title I, and rural schools. Student‑teacher mentors must be highly effective (level 3 or higher on both criteria 3 and 6) and receive mentor training. Programs may use unspent federal or state funds to support residencies and mentoring for students likely to keep teaching in the placement district. Programs must submit and update plans at least every three years, and the board posts them online.
