Osteopathic graduates can get an educational permit to practice only inside an approved postgraduate program under supervision. The first permit can last up to 15 months; later permits can last up to 12 months. A permit ends when you leave the program and can be suspended or revoked by the board.
Osteopathic physicians renew every two years by July 1. The board must send a notice at least 30 days before expiration. To renew, you must complete 32 hours of training every two years, with at least half as category (1), and include medical nutrition education. If you miss renewal, your license rights are automatically suspended. To reinstate, you must show training for the past two years, pay the past two years’ fees, and a reinstatement fee set by rule. The board may propose rules to allow inactive renewal.
In West Virginia, physicians and podiatrists renew every two years. To renew, you must file the board form, pay the fee, and certify at least 50 hours of continuing education in the past two years, including nutrition. The board accepts AMA or AAFP Category I for physicians and Council on Podiatric Education for podiatrists, and may approve others. If you do not timely send CE proof, your license automatically expires until the board approves it; within one year you owe the renewal fee plus a reinstatement fee equal to 50% of it, and after one year you must reapply and pay board-set fees. If the board asks, you must provide CE documents within 30 days or the renewal is treated as likely fraudulent. You may hold an inactive license (no practice allowed); to reactivate, request in writing and show 50 hours of CE for each two-year period; inactive status needs a biennial application and fee. The renewal form cannot ask about a certain voluntary agreement, retirees who surrender do not have to return the paper license, and the board may deny a license after a felony conviction.
