CPAs can form accounting corporations

Beginning July 1, 2026, one or more certified public accountants or public accountants can organize and own an accounting corporation in West Virginia, under terms and limits set by rule. When the Secretary of State has the authorization certificate and the application meets the corporate code, the Secretary issues a certificate of incorporation. Accounting corporations formed before July 1, 2001 remain valid under state law.

Naming rules for accounting corporations

Beginning July 1, 2026, an accounting corporation’s name must include “accounting corporation” or “A.C.” You may not use “company,” “corporation,” “incorporated,” or other corporate words, except “accounting corporation” or “A.C.” Firms that do not meet this must choose a name that fits the rule.
