Officers not on active duty in the Army National Guard can send Army Guard members to active‑duty training under section 12301(d). With the Secretary of the Air Force’s approval, they can also send Air Guard members. Officers not on active duty in the Air National Guard can send Air Guard members to that training and, with the Secretary of the Army’s approval, can send Army Guard members. Those officers can enlist, reenlist, or extend people as Reserves of the Army or Reserves of the Air Force for Guard service. For those Reserve members, the officers can also promote or discharge them for Federal purposes. The Secretary of the Army makes the rules for Army matters, and the Secretary of the Air Force makes the rules for Air matters.
