The Secretary of Defense may provide reintegration help for recovered Department of Defense personnel and may give post-isolation support for other recovered people, such as U.S. government officers or employees, allied or coalition military or civilian staff, and other U.S. or foreign nationals. Help can include food, clothing, needed medical care, and basic personal items; travel or travel allowances for no more than three family members or other designated people if the leader of a military medical treatment facility thinks their presence will aid recovery and under rules set by the Secretary of Defense; and transportation or reimbursement for attending events that the facility leader says help the recovered person’s physical or mental health. Medical care for recovered people who are not service members may be provided for no more than 20 days. Post‑isolation support: short debriefing, health‑support activities, and help returning to civilian life quickly. Recovered person: someone returned alive after being detained during a U.S.‑sponsored military activity. Reintegration: debriefing, health support, and help returning to military duty or DoD work.
