Under rules set by the Secretary of Defense, a former commissioned officer who meets the qualifications can be appointed to the reserves of the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps. If appointed, they can be placed on that service’s reserve active‑status list in the same permanent regular or reserve grade and the same competitive category in which they last served satisfactorily on active duty or in an active status. They can also be given credit, for figuring their date of rank under section 741(d), for time in the grade equal to the grade they held when discharged or separated.
