Title 10 › Subtitle Subtitle E— - Reserve Components › Part PART IV— - TRAINING FOR RESERVE COMPONENTS AND EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS › Chapter CHAPTER 1609— - EDUCATION LOAN REPAYMENT PROGRAMS › § 16303
The military can pay off a person's loan to help keep enough chaplains in the Selected Reserve. To get this help, a person must meet the rules to become a commissioned chaplain, be fully qualified or hold an appointment as a reserve chaplain, and sign a written agreement to serve at least three years. People who join the Chaplain Candidate Program cannot get this loan help. Payments can cover the loan principal, interest, and related costs, up to $20,000 for each three-year service period. No more than 50% can be paid before the person finishes the first year; the rest is paid under military rules. If the person does not start or finish the agreed service, they must follow the military’s repayment penalties. The Secretary of Defense must create rules to run this program.
