Title 10 › Subtitle Subtitle F— - Alternative Military Personnel Systems › Part PART I— - SPACE FORCE › Chapter CHAPTER 2005— - OFFICERS › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER III— - PROMOTIONS › § 20243
When a Space Force officer on the general officer list stops holding a job that matches their general rank or a higher one, the Secretary of the Air Force must, within 60 days, either transfer or discharge the officer based on the officer’s choice. The officer can pick one of four options: transfer in grade to the Space Force retired list (if qualified and they apply); transfer in grade to inactive status (if qualified); be discharged and, if qualified and they ask, be reappointed to the grade they held before becoming a general; or be discharged. If the officer is reappointed to the lower grade, they must get credit for time served equal to the active-duty time they had in that grade and in any higher grade.
