The Secretary of Defense can let up to 20 percent of each class at the University do civilian federal work instead of going on active military duty. This can happen only if the military does not need them for active duty and the Secretary does not call them back. Those who agree in writing must work in federal civilian jobs for at least seven years after finishing their professional education. Where they work and what job they do will be set by the Secretary after talking with the federal agencies involved.
