To join the program, a person must be a citizen of the United States and be accepted into or enrolled in a school course or picked for special training. They must sign an agreement to finish the schooling, accept a military reappointment for their health job if offered, take part in their service’s intern or residency training if chosen (or be released to do a civilian residency if selected), and do required military training while in the program. They also must meet the rules to become a commissioned officer. The Secretary of Defense may require that the person agree to accept a residency in a health skill the Secretary calls a critically needed wartime skill if it is offered.
