The Secretary of Defense can use military aircraft to fly certain veterans from American Samoa to Hawaii when they need hospital care. To qualify, a veteran must live in American Samoa and be found by a VA official designated by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to need hospital care in VA facilities in Hawaii under chapter 17 of title 38. Flights are only provided if there is space available, and veterans cannot be charged for the transportation.
