Title 10 › Subtitle Subtitle A— - General Military Law › Part PART IV— - SERVICE, SUPPLY, AND PROPERTY › Chapter CHAPTER 169— - MILITARY CONSTRUCTION AND MILITARY FAMILY HOUSING › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER II— - MILITARY FAMILY HOUSING › § 2835a
If family housing built and leased under the military build-and-lease program is not needed for families, the Secretary in charge can assign service members who have no dependents to live there at no rent. Those assigned will be treated as officially assigned to government quarters. If the housing is more than needed for families long-term, the Secretary can change the lease so the buildings become long-term housing for unaccompanied members. The new lease cannot last longer than whatever time is left on the original lease. The Secretary must send an electronic notice to the appropriate Congressional committees and wait 14 days after sending it before making the change. The same rules apply to housing first obtained under the old Build to Lease program.
