If the Secretary of Energy or their designee is told that radioactive or hazardous material from atomic energy defense waste at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Richland, Washington was released into the air above legal limits, they must notify the congressional defense committees within two business days. Within seven business days of that notice, the Secretary must give those committees a briefing on the release’s status. The briefing must say the cause of the release if it is known and include early plans to deal with and clean it up, with estimated costs and timelines.
