Regular Army, Air Force, and Marine Corps brigadier generals, Regular Navy rear admirals (lower half), and Space Force brigadier generals must be retired if they are not on a promotion list for major general (or rear admiral for Navy). They must be retired on the first day of the month after their five‑year anniversary in that grade or on the first day of the month after the month they reach 30 years of active commissioned service, whichever comes later, unless exceptions under section 637(b) or 637a apply.
