The Secretary of the Army must assign a general officer to be the Army’s Inspector General. That officer’s normal tour is not more than four years, but the Secretary can extend it if he finds the extra time is needed in the public interest. When the Secretary or the Chief of Staff asks, the Inspector General must look into and report on the Army’s discipline, how well it operates, and how it uses money, and must carry out other tasks they assign. The Inspector General must also suggest regular inspection plans, recommend extra inspections or investigations when needed, work closely with the Department of Defense Inspector General on Army matters under chapter 4 of title 5, and have deputies and assistants who are Army officers assigned by the Secretary for tours of up to four years under the Secretary’s procedures.
